There's plenty of BS, but I'm confident that over the years, I've gotten almost six figures worth of ideas from these forums.  I hardly cal l that not helping my business.

I agree completely Indy.  In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if I didn't find the RR mag forum I would've probably quit the business within a year.

To elaborate on that, keep in mind that I joined an existing Indy practice.  A practice where, we have a couple of part time guys who are mainly health insurance agents, myself, and the DS and his daughter (who are on a team).

Absolutely great people, but the part timers don't even have an office or cube, they work from home or from their day job.  The OSJ is pretty comfy, and has definitely lost his desire to cultivate the business.  He's frequently not there, his daughter pretty much runs his book.

That being said, I basically was ready to take the S7 when I went in and ask to be sponsored.  After I got my licenses, this was the extent of my training..

"well, you're licensed now, so if you have a chance to talk to someone about doing business, make an appointment with them."

End of training.

No salary.  No benefits.  Paid my own licensing, study materials, E&O, background check, credit check, literally everything out of my own pocket.  Zero training - on anything.  And I built everything on my own entirely.

So when you put it in perspective, yeah, without guys like Indyone, Sportsfreakbob, Mo, Primo, Snags, Anonymous, Bond Guy, The Judge, Deekay, Gaddock, and yes even Bio and a slew of others, I probably would have quit.

That forum, and these people, are just a tremendous resource.  Totally awesome.

Edit:  And no, I don't think I learned a great deal about investments here, I had that coming in.  But I didn't know jack about prospecting, insurance, annuities, practice management, a whole slew of things..  Just great.

forums have their place.

Where the issue is, is when people go on the forum, just so they dont have to do what they know they have to do.

Former Amp P1 & UBS, Now RIA and couldn't be happier.

I thought I would share my story as I am feeling a bit nostalgic this evening.  I came across these forums back in 2006.  In my office there were two types of brokers.  Those that were busy working and had no time to talk, and those that were busy not working and had no time to talk about anything business related.  I signed up at RR with a different name than I use now and Snaggletooth was the first to welcome me after a few posts.  I found a place to do the unthinkable, talk to my peers about business.  Share ideas and gather knowledge to help me in my practice.  Soon I was posting regularly.  There were epic threads we still talk about a few years later including one Iceco1d and I had about actice v passive money management.  My favorite of all time was a thread (completely non-business related) about a guy named Toby Harris.  Joedabrkr (I hope he is doing well) and I spent hours having fun at his expense.  I found something I was lacking, other financial geeks that wanted to talk shop after hours and a place to blow off some steam also.

As time progressed, turns out I tend to anger the internet tough guys, including some pretty well known ones.  I have little time for arguments that contain no intelligent discourse, and was very vocal in that respect.  So to date I have had a number of ID's (yes Ron we have had the Favre conversation more than once) because I work at a place that frowned on participation on these boards until recently.  I have worked  very hard to keep my identity a secret from the guys who take the internet too seriously.  As the board at RR became more "I'm gonna out you" and less "Do you think we are at the bottom yet?" I cut back on the amount of time and the number of posts I made until the day came that I walked away completely.

Out of curiosity, I came back earlier this year.  Although I had my usernames deleted each time I changed, I decided to fly a flag and register under Primo.  Right away, Ice sent me a PM asking if I was the same Primo as before.   Upon confirmation,  he invited me to this forum.  I enjoy spending time on the forums again.  There are those members I have little time for, but that number is very low.  I get ideas and try to help where I can.  But mostly I socialize and this helps me as our business is very stressful and their is a certain kinship amongst brokers.  I have made friends on these forums that I will keep in touch with for a long time.  I want to thank the people who started this forum and the people that pay for it to stay up.  I appreciate it and am glad that I can contribute in a small way.

You can love another man without being gay Ron.  I know this goes against everything you have ever been taught but it is true.  Now sit down and catch your breath, it is gonna be all right.

Both are needed to keep the board vibrant.

LSU put that in another thread.  I think he is spot on.  When RR changed the software, whether it was intentional on their part or not, it basically killed the social aspect of the board.  Those of us who were used to that part of it didn't like the change and left.  Anyone who signed up at RR after their software change, wouldn't know what they missed.

It's hard to tell yet because I'm not in production, but both forums have been a great resource for me to use to decide whether to make the jump into this industry.   There is a wealth of knowledge here, and because of it I feel like I am more prepared for the upcoming battle than I would have been otherwise.

I must also add that this board has helped me tremendously. I have not started on my own yet but just the support and feedback I have received thus far has been amazing.

I am sure the value of this board begins to deminish once you become successful and build your book. However, it seems there are those out there that simply give back for the joy of seeing others succeed and to help contribute to the profession. Hats off to you guys!

I hope one day to give back to others in that way.
