Nice work, every long journey starts with a step, and so on and so forth.

I sort of give a fuck.

I realize that a "real" first contact is name, need, number....That was the line over and over and over at KYC.  I know that is the only way to get numbers for Eval/grad at that is always my goal.  What circumstances would you add a prospect in if you didnt get a number?  I am gettng pretty mixed advice about when to add a prospect even though i didnt get a # or a strong need. Any thoughts??

If you have a reason to return then do it. Get the number the second time around. Getting a need and reason to return beats a phone number and no reason to call all day long.

Someone you can call and let them hear you? They don't care, it's all bout the contacts. I was told I was opening too many accounts there, i violated trade regs because of it. Are you ready to call the assistant deli manager at 9:00?

Nate, only you have the answer. Do you think this person will be a client one day? If so then add them in and go back. If not then don't. Honestly, when all you really have to do is prospect all day long which is basically at LEAST your first full year of selling, then knock on as many doors as possible and find the low hanging fruit. You will be AMAZED at how much easy money is out there.

It's not so easy, but I will concur.

true words wsu. You dont need 25 quality contacts but put down all contacts to get to their magic 25. If you can find 3 greens a day you will succeed.

Awesome information. I appreciate it.  It is truly amazing how the minute i got back to my field trainer and others in the region I had to completely unlearn everything they taught at KYC.  I get the concensus...do what you have to do to get through Eval/Grad then build you business like a real business.  Makes sense.  Last week the criteria was fogging the mirror, this week at least I am trying to get good information out of them.
I did have the cops called on me yesterday.  I guess that is some weird Jonesy right of passage.

man...i am getting lit up out there.  I am having tons of conversations and literally knocking on 500 doors a day....I cant get anyone to give me their number!  I was told that my area was a tough DK area but this is ridiculous because it is one of the nicest areas around and every JO solicits in there.  I am sure I could be better in asking and phrasing but holy crap.  Please tell me that it clicks sooner than later.

I thought that if you haven't been arrested while doorknocking, you weren't trying. Or if a dog hadn't chewed the ass out of your pants, you weren't trying.

Almost got arrested on Monday.  Even the cop was laughing at the silliness of it all.

Never had the cops called on me, but a lady chased me off her porch with a broom. Good news is that a few months later after she forgot about me, I sold her a bond over the phone. Confused Door knocking can be degrading, but it works. When you're new degrading doesn't matter, you do whatever you have to do to bring in new money.

Make sure you've built some kind of rapport before you ask for the number.  The only prospects that will freely give you their phone number for no reason are prospects you don't really want.

If you're having a real conversation figure a way ask in a way that isn't awkward.  If you're talking about their flowers one second and then ask for their number it isn't going to work very well. Make it a natural part of the end of your conversation, after 1 or 2 pieces of info (keep it short), thanks them for talking to you and say "What's your number" while looking down at your paper.

If they are a bond buyer ask them if it's ok if you let them know about new issues as they come available.  If they say yes, ask for the number. Tell them you want to get in touch when you see a good rate come up "When I see a good rate I'll let you know". Make them tell you no.

If they are in the accumulation phase offer them a review of their portfolio.  Ask them if they might be interested in one.  Ask for the number.

If they are retired, not a bond buyer or whatever, tell them you're going to be having a open house when you get your office / doing a seminar in the future.  Ask them if they might like to drop by.  Ask for the number.

Get them to say yes to you once before you ask for the number so it isn't weird.  Put yourself in their shoes.  Would you give your cell phone number to a sweaty guy in a suit on your doorstep for no reason?  There has to be some kind of interest there. If the person is/seems like a professional type, tell them you want a business card.

I recently had a PASS Program person out doorknocking for me.  She was able to get valid phone numbers from 80%+ of people she met because she beat it out of them.  I don't think she would leave unless they gave it to her.  Don't be her.  She got the police called on her, too.

And finally - http://www.whitepages.com/find_neighbors  Use this, but don't let it be a crutch.

****************

Doorknocking is like systematically walking up to every girl in the bar and saying, "Wanna fuck?"  Using this approach you'll get some yes answers (probably from girls you don't necessarily want), and a hell of a lot of no's.  To get the better girls you're gonna need to flirt a little first - show them what you have to offer.

I saw the newest local rep doorknocking my neighbor this morning.  I was sincerely hoping he would come up to me, but from the body language it looked like said neighbor was pointing out the fact that I used to be a Jones rep.
