What’s going on everyone. New FA here. 66,7, 2-15 licensed . Figured I’d join for some entertainment and support since I’ve only been in the game for about 5 months now and already spend my nights curled up in fetal position wondering when my knuckles are going to heal from knocking on doors.

Where my Jones people at!

Thanks Ron. It’s going.

I feel like it’s inefficient but I have had some good conversations with people. Usually get 3-7 contacts per 100 houses. I’m still in the “trainee” stage at Jones so I’m kind of restricted on what I can do right now. I have to hit 250 contacts before the 26th. I’m sitting at 190 but I have about 55 contacts from my LinkedIn I’m about to drop in to hit this number. It’s not that door knocking is hard, it’s just inefficient and feels like your playing slots at a casino. You don’t really know who’s behind the door and no way to target specific people. The hardest part is knowing when people are home. For every 10 doors I usually get 1 or 2 who answer.

I’ll add that this industry is completely ass backwards. Just figuring shit out as I go. I’m assuming that’s why only the strong survive. I come from the financial technology world so I like to think I know my shit but damn. Most “trainers” don’t seem to know how to train or even want to.

I feel like I’m throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Learning by trial and error. Jones provides “some” training but these old guards out here want nothing to do with millennials lol.

You are throwing stuff to see what sticks.  You can't millennial yourself into success in this job.  Fintech is an oxymoron and Jones BTW.  I've got a millennial in my office right now.  He's pretty good with getting appointments with people his same age.  But he's going to end up losing his spot at the table if all he's focusing on are kids his age.
Oh, and Jones training is good compared to the rest of the industry.  At least as far as the major firms go.

Just curious, but if you were in financial technology, how did you end up with Jones?

Funneling in LinkedIn contacts instead of picking up those 50 contacts at the door is a huge mistake. 250 is the min and it’s about half or a third of what most of us got at your stage. Like everything else, Jones has softened to make way for millennials. Now go out and get 350. You’ll thank me later

Nut- don't be so strict on who you make as a contact. For people to give you information at the door you almost have to have them at gun point. If they are friendly at all, and you think they fit your target, put them in anyways and try to find their number online.

Merrill stopped replying to me after the 3rd round of interviewing. It was down to Morgan Stanley, Northwestern Mutual, and Jones. Jones took me to dinners, told me about having my own branch with assistant, base minimum salary, tap trips, making crazy money etc..I was told to stay away from northwestern mutual.

I’m about to get married in March and starting out with no base would be tough at this point in time. Morgan Stanley was just super sloppy with the recruitment process so I went with Jones.

I figured since I’m starting from scratch, Jones might be a better spot. I do have an RIA who keeps head hunting me but again, no base salary. The recruiter from MS reached out again the other day to see if I was still interested I told her I’d stay in touch.

You definitely made the right choice. Jones is by far the best place to start.

If Morgan Stanley finds out you failed at Jones, it’s doubtful they hire you (unless the branch manager has a new hire goal to hit).

I hear ya bc. My buddies told me the same thing. I read “the game of numbers” by nick murray so I’m starting to understand this world a bit more. I just didn’t have an ounce of confidence when I started dking. I was so fucking nervous just to get out of my damn truck. After 3 weeks now I’m starting to become more confident in my skills and aggressive with also for contact information.

My problem was I started knocking on super wealthy neighborhoods on southwest Florida. These people wanted nothing to do with me. I’ve found a good middle ground of working class neighborhoods that i get better results with.

I just want to build a solid foundation. I didn’t want to build my book with garbage that I’d have to trim later but I can’t be picky right now. Need whatever crumbs I can get

Lmao. I’m an Italian from NYC. I try to curb it but it happens.

I hope everyone subscribed cause I’m not going anywhere. I’ll succeed at this but I have a lot of learning to do. What tips you guys got for better ratios on dking? What about other prospecting methods? Should I be adding other sourcing methods in here after my can serve date?

You are getting married - don't make promises you can't keep.

Nut, one of the things I found was that doorknocking in the later afternoon/evening (4-7pm) and Saturdays 11-4pm was WAY more efficient than knocking during the day. Obviously that will depend on where you knock. I live in a sleepy New England town. If you are in a retirement community, obviously it's different.

But I had the same experience as you. I could knock from 9am-4pm and get 5 contacts. Or I could knock from 4-7pm and get 15-20, because WAY more people are home.

Then you can spend you mornings going to businesses.

Also, pay close attention to where people work in your area. If you have a couple of really large businesses in your area, focus your LinkedIn efforts on those people.
