Hello all,

I’ve been an advisor for 7-8 years now mostly in the discount brokerage world. Just assumed an office with a certain firm that prefers door knocking as a method of prospecting. I’m interested in any tips or tricks I might be able to pick up along the way!

I think he says he is leaving the discount world for the wonderful world that is Jones.

Welcome Polar!

As far as door knock best practices go, this struck me as being some pretty good advice...

Just out of curiosity... whats your door knocking approach? Just email or email and cells? what are you follow up calling with (pitching product?, inviting to seminar?, asking for port review?) what are you handing out at the door?

Sure.

All door knock discussions come down to the questions you just posed. What you say does matter, how you say it matters, the follow up process matters. All that "ancillary" stuff matters. But I fully subscribe to the Nick Murray argument that all of THAT matters, but it all matters to such a small degree relative to the volume/frequency variables: how often do you go and how many doors do you knock when you do go. Some might want to argument this particular point and they are free to do so but I'm not interested. As long as you aren't a complete incompetent with severe social handicaps what you say and how you say it is probably "fine."

With said, I've changed my approach to the "stuff that matters less" a lot and I don't know what the best script is or the best follow up process is and at this exact moment I've stopped trying to figure it out.

For where MY BUSINESS is RIGHT NOW I have the time--generally speaking--to door knock 16 hours a week: 4 hours Saturday, 4 hours Monday and two other 4 hour blocks at some point throughout the week. I do time block but I'd be bullshitting if I said I live and die by it.

Do I always go 16 hours a week? No. Do I religiously keep all stats? No. Do I keep track of doors knocked, contacts made, and numbers acquired? Yes.

250 doors knocked per week is my Bare Ass Minimum number. For me personally, especially this time of year, if I don't hit that number I'm not doing my job and more importantly I'm not taking care of my familial responsibilities. Do I always hit that number? No. There's been about 5 times since May I haven't hit it. Some times I do give in to "fuck it, it's too hot." Or "fuck it. I just had my best month ever. I wanna go home and bang my wife before her son gets home from school. Those things happen but not often. Why? Because 250 doors per week is not difficult at all. That's why I chose that number: easily attainable but still worth the time when done consistently.

I could go on and on but I'm not saying anything that Murray hasn't said better or Wolf hasn't already demonstrated.

I will add this though. You don't have to door knock. You can prospect other ways. And if you can't pick a bare minimum number that is meaningful for you and stick to it for a month then you shouldn't think of DKing as your primary means of prospecting, cuz you aren't actually doing it. Do something different. Fuck, plenty of people do. Talk to those people and try what they do. Just. Do. Something. And so it consistently and be honest with yourself about your effort.

I doorknock for 3 reasons. One, it works for me. 2. I know if I keep doing it I will be successful and won't HAVE to keep doing it. And three, because I fucking hate chamber events and other "community based events." They suck and I'm not good at working them. Maybe some day.

That's it

And be sure to read TheWolf22's 500 Day Battle for more good advice (and inspiration).

Good luck out there!
