I have been in retail sales for 2 years and have been successful for that world. Now I've maxed out my bonus structure and want to go to the next level. I've been pretty obsessed with my own financial planning since I started pulling halfway respectable money so an FA job seemed interesting.
I figure Ill have a better shot at a job at EDJ as they supposedly like career changers and I've always done well in hustle-your-ass-off jobs/cultures.
Nice forum, you're all assholes and it makes for great reading.

I've always thought a Scwan's rep, if you could fit him in a suit and get him to pass the 7, would be $$ for that firm. They would have to switch territories though.

I'm good. This is pretty f-ing funny.
Nevertheless, have any of you douchebags gotten your car worked on lately? It's not cheap. My total sales are at 500k for the year.
Not saying I've arrived. As stated, I want another job. But you do get to know a lot of customers really well and you learn how to sell shit. People get pissed off when their piece of shit car remains a.piece of shit car and you learn to retain good customers through rough patches.
Plus I'll leave with 200 or so warm leads from this job.

jtp - I believe Nathan can get a bonus for referring you - just FYI
Otherwise 2 years in retail sales doesn't mean crap. All it means is that you are not completely inept, socially at least. Selling up charges on people's cars is nothing. Most people are idiots when it comes to cars and probably don't realize you are selling them. Spending $200 on a car that you need to get to work, is different than $200k IRA.
Now all that is to say you can make it no matter what your background. This job is simple in what you need to do (find clients) but difficult to do it (more many reasons).

Working in the parts department of a car dealership, and thinking that gives you enough experience to be a FA is like saying because you've got a boating licence you can fly a 747. You think you "hustle" while sitting behind a desk where customers come to you? You're in for a rude awakening IF you ever get an FA job. Only piece of advice I can give is read every piece of financial news you can get your hands on to sound somewhat competent on the subject.

Being at a car dealership is JUST like being an FA, except harder.

Just an update: Have my face to face interview next week. So far it has mostly been them trying to make sure I actually want the job. They emphasize the down sides a lot. If someone makes it through the process and is then suprised by the challenge they would have to be a genuine idiot.
My gut is this next interview will be more the traditional "are you good enough for us" sort of thing.
They are not making me do the survey thing. I don't know if that's new policy or if they can just already tell I'm a stud.

The F2F will be heavy on behaviorial interview questions. If you are not familiar and practiced in answering them then you will fail. Google some sample and practice. You are going in to talk to true believers who will take the attitude of...why should I risk my LP capital on hiring you?......thats the culture...if you come off as too cool for the room, the former gym teacher/ beer truck driver/ amusement park character will blow you off pretty quick.
Survey activity got nixed a couple months ago. Too much liability to send someone who hasnt even been hired to knock on doors....as stupid as it was, it gave a slice of what they will expect from you for a while.

I am upset they got rid of the site survey. I feel like it would weed out a bunch of people. I had to do it and found out they got rid of it about a week after I did it. If you make it to the day in the life, that is a good time, and I heard it did weed out like 35% of applicants from some vets at KYC.

I can attest that getting names & numbers from the survey is a far cry from having someone hand over the big bucks. Up selling car service is nothing like meeting strangers and turning them into clients in 5-7 weeks.

NathanExplosion- I wasn't being sarcastic. I am already preparing for the interview in exactly the manner you told me to.
I was cavalier earlier in this thread because I was responding to schmucks who made fun of me for selling tires when all I did was answer their question as to what I currently sell for a living.
As far as drinking the kool-aid I've drank it hard at my current job and it has worked. I make more than anyone else I know in my company at my position because I just do exactly what they trained me to do and I sell hard as fuck all day long. My plan at EDJ would be to do the exactly the same thing but with a drastically higher income potential.
I'm taking this very seriously.

Alright I hear ya....seriously google behavioral questions and practice a bunch of them. It has to be a conversation and you will want to show that you represent well face to face. Speak their language as much as possible. 25 contacts is MINIMUM!!!! always aim to "EXCEED"....you do not have to tie in why selling auto upgrades translates well to financial sales , but you do have to show how you came to provide the solution to the customers needs. Be genuine, be humble, be confident. You should be ok.
As for the schmucks from earlier....comes with the territory here....especially if you are going to go with Jones. There is no better place to find real honest feedback in this fucked up biz from people who have done it or or are doing it than here so embrace the love!!!!

Good man jtp. I know you are interested in finance, but hell theres a lot of sales positions you could do and make a killing. Im meeting with a 35 year old guy on Thursday that makes 250k a year selling accounting software. I have another client that sells medical equipment and makes more and they dont have any of the headache that goes along with being an advisor. They do travel a shit ton though. Im just saying if you are a straight salesman, there are other positions that you should maybe look into as well.

Good luck getting into acct software or medical equip sales. I will give Jones this...they will take someone without a ton of internal connections or direct degree or background and gives them the training to sell. I think they need to focus more on training than counting on wholesalers to show mountain chart...but they will teach you to sell their way.

I will take shit as it comes. There'll be some opportunities at my current employer within the next year but it's a bitch of an industry in some ways.
There is more about the Jones job that makes me want it besides the "I think I can sell" line. I've always read financial news like it was my job, I'd never need to move to get a raise, I can do it when I'm 72 if I want to, etc. ... I honestly think I'd be good at it and happy doing it.
I've emphasized the sales thing in the application process thus far because I have experience there and I suspect that's where a lot of new hires falter. I figure if I convince them I can handle that they'll give me a shot.

Face to face interview interview went awesome. Guy was really cool and I am impressed with the culture.
Best part is I was totally honest and it seemed like both of us thought it would be a good fit. Usually interviews feel more like a performance.
NE's advice on speaking the Jones language payed off. I got complemented on that. Thanks again.
If I had it to do over again I would have worked harder on being referred by an existing Jones FA. That has come up a couple times now. Doesn't feel like a huge deal but we'll see.

Now on to the biz plan....more of the same...speak their language and be sure to stress the key points.....meeting is just meeting, exceeding expectations is the new meeting. If the say do 25...do 35. Stress how you will think outside the box to find people face to face. Time block your days with a heavy emphasis on f2f contacts and call sessions. As far as I know, the biz plan goes to the home office drones not region hiring team so be aware of that...yes it's different...I could be wrong though based on your area. This should be a relative formality but take it seriously..the day in the life garbage has been what has caught really good candidates off guard lately.

The person i talked with said that was good to make sure to have work/life balance. You won't have to do site survey. I also have heard the day in the life knocks out quite a bit of good candidates.

I keep hearing that. Why? What makes it hard?

it isnt rocket science...believe it or not the biggest issue is that they give you 10 calls to make...most people that fail only make 3 calls....just do the f ing work.

My jones business plan was basically 55 hours per week..... Also vets get credit towards a DIV trip if someone referred you and you are hired so that might be why they asked.
The day in the life is a joke, just call everyone on the list they give you and plan on being rejected by the entire list. There is a presentation you are supposed to make over the phone and even if you do very well you will be more than likely rejected. I think a lot of people hear the rejection and think they must have failed and then just let that spiral out of control. This entire job is like 95% rejection so if you can't deal with it during a trial run then you won't be hired lol

At the end of the day it sounds like being married is my best qualification for the position.

Make calls in the Day in the Life. Don't get bogged with emails, it's a trap.

Met with the long-time FA in my town today at his request. If things work out it is possible he would offer me a 5m goodknight. Last time he tried this the guy washed out so he wanted to size me up. He was straightfoward that it would be a mix of hard to engage / needy / PIA clients.
I'm assuming that would still be worthwhile for me, right?
Not trying to get ahead of things too much. Phone interview next week then hopefully day in the life after that. He reiterated what the Jones guys said here regarding the day in the life.

$5mm to start is nice but it isn't going to change your life by any means. Set up where you want to be, not just because you are being offered a small GK. I would ask the vet FA, how many GK's has he/she done? The first one always has a bunch of shit in it.

Jtp- I am a big fan. I like your mindset. Delbs is right a 5mil goodknight isn't much at all. Especially if the guy hasn't done many. You will be getting a steaming pile of shit accounts so your prospecting will still make or break you. Just tread lightly. EJ doesn't give a fuck about you or your success as much as they act like they are one big family. It is a low goals wirehouse with herd mentality employees. Look out for yourself first.

5 mill is better than nothing unless some genius in stl decides to move you up in expectations ...p1 to p2. Than nothing is better!!! Most good knights are kinda dog shit but so are most of the doorknock clients. Start thinking outside the box now.

I did a $5mm GK about 7 years ago, and I managed to eliminate all but ONE client. It was complete horseshit assets. A shitty $1mm 401K for a group that eventually was sold (and 401K rolled into), a $1.2mm stock account for a CPA at the other end of the state that rarely trades, and the prior FA agreed to like a 25% discount on trades (he had it with us ebcause he didn't want any advisors in his own network to know how much money he had - and he had other accounts spread around other brokers), a $850K all stock account for a 87 year old woman with dementia (who's son handled and never traded), the rest of it was about 150 small accounts that took me 2 years to plow through and eventually closed about 100 of the accounts (after getting in touch, sending checks for the $23.57 left in their account from 12 years earlier). The ONE account I still have has become one of my largest accounts, but he had about $60K at the time.
On the bright side, it helped me learn a lot early on, dealing with clients, talking to people that I had permission to talk to, etc. I think having assets are important and a great learning tool. But it takes your eye off the ball of prospecting.
I still think the recruiting/development/training process for newbies is horribly wrong at Jones and most other firms.

I just took over a very tiny office where the FA was fired a few weeks ago (3.5 mil).... She literally never showed anyone any reports. I found like 2.5 mil in assets the first week just by showing people basic portfolio charts and now that I've run through the entire list of existing clients to call and generating whatever business was needed for them (basically my first full week selling) I'm right back out prospecting.
The nice part about taking a small office or goodnight plan is that you basically will have your PDP numbers done in like 4-5 weeks but after that it's almost like starting new. It's nice to have some of the pressure taken off and in my case I have a 5yr BOA who I get along with very well so that's been extremely helpful. The real negative I have found (and what most have said already) is that of my 100 or so household 40 are inactive, 30 are absolute trash. There's probably a gem or two in that mess but if you just focus on calling them and get lazy your basically screwed later on

Having the Goodknight lined up may help streamline the hiring process, it used to anyway, I've been gone a while. I know in my town the EDJ rep can pretty much pick anyone to get hired if he will give them a Goodknight. He is a big producer that has been trying unsuccessfully to Goodknight for quite a while, and the town is an armpit no one wants to move to, so I don't know how much that plays into the equation.
Take seriously the 95% rejection part, that's why most people fail. You lay out what you think is a great plan that will help the person you are talking to. He kicks you in the nuts. You get up, smile, and repeat another 30 times. Every day. For a couple of years. Anyone who tells you it doesn't suck is lying. My wife listened in on a few of my calls when I first got started. She was shaking. If you don't have a personality defect that lets you shake this off, you won't survive the first 2 years.
The good news is that in 5-10 years, you can be a 4 day a week piker and make good money. I like my life now, just happy I didn't kill myself 10 years ago.

My wife reminded me last night, when she was turning me down again, how much of a bitch I was when I started out. You were fat, on medications, and the biggest asshole all the time, were her words.
My follow-up question got a commitment for tomorrow night, which is now tonight.
Oh yeah, say you are the jones rep in a podunk town, you do a 5mil goodnight, the new guy turns out to really suck, and then boom, you have all the clients back again! Awkward.

I would be the 3rd attempt on the same goodknight (reading between the lines here a bit). So ya, I would probably lose a few accounts from just their sheer frustration with how much no one wants to work with them.
