This seems like a giant clusterfu@%

After years of being told the IRS will only contact you by mail, I am assuming most people will ignore an email like this due to them thinking it was a scam.

Uh, yeah. How does the IRS get your official e-mail address?

I've never heard of the IRS e-mailing you. I don't think the IRS e-mails people (unsolicited anyway). That doesn't sound "official".

They are moving more and more toward a system where you have an individualized IRS account, which is a good thing IMO, as it allows you to track payments and refunds, etc. I have to assume that's where the e-mail addresses will come from.

That said, I agree that they can't go from "no e-mail or phone calls" to sending e-mail.

My point was that I think the irs explicitly states they will not contact you via email. I think this story is either false or someone is being conned.

There is a glitch in their systems and I have seen the paper notices but never heard of them coming via email.
