Topic: Ed Jones area Metrics
Posted By: Gob
Subject: Ed Jones area Metrics
Date Posted: Jun/23/2023 at 5:40pm
Hi all, I tried to post in a different forum but didn’t have sufficient privileges.

Anyways, I am in early talks to buy out a retiring adviser who’s about 4 hours away from my city. He’s in a smaller town (8000 people) but there is 3 ed jones offices.

I am thinking about the potential of the area and wondering if anyone knows the metrics that Jones uses when opening a new office on an area.

Ultimately, does jones having 3 offices in a small town mean they think there are significant assets at play?

No…it doesn’t matter…….what else do you bring to the table?  Do you have a professional or other network you can tap into for business?

Jones will keep opening office as long as the lead advisor continues to do Goodnight’s.  A town close to me has either 5 or 6 with one being dominant and the rest very average at best (town of 25k) They want quantity over quality for a number of reasons.  I will say if you are buying them that is strange language being EJ but you had better plan on moving there or the others will steal you relationships.

I will also add that they could have seven advisors in an 8k town as long as they are remotely profitable (probably 250-300k) production.  That is not the metric from my understanding.  Take all I say with a grain of salt as I left almost 25 years ago but I do think I am right.  I am pretty good friends with the level 10 huge producer and that is my understanding. He does about $2.5-3.0 a year and has spun off several douche bags I mean Goodnight’s.

You’re not at Jones, and looking to buy a Jones guy who is 4 hours away and in a flooded market?

Chances are one of you is going to get screwed in this situation.

I did it!!

I am not buying a Jones office or going to jones. I have an ria and manage $150mm and in talks to purchase a smaller ria, around $70mm.

I’m concerned about the distance between the offices and am curious about the potential of the area. Since it has 3 jones offices I am curious if that means Jones thinks the area has growth potential.

IDK much about Jones...but I doubt Jones (or that location of their current offices) has any data/relevance the area's growth potential.

To answer your question. Maybe.

Your best bet would be to look pure demographic data. Population/Age/etc

A clever workaround… call leading response or another mail house. Ask them to see how many people, based on the criteria you give them, they can mail to. If it’s lots .. you are good to go.

Whoa!

Good luck getting your hands on this top secret data.  They keep it locked away with the research that says...

1. multiple goals = more assets
2. 5-7 contacts turns a prospect into a client
3. clients wants to make choices such as commission vs managed
4. clients want to select their own portfolio from a menu of quality investments
5. FA's need to be reprogrammed by agile coaches
6. a diverse workforce will capture the diverse assets
7. roth conversions are to be discussed by CPAs, not advisors
8. innovate NEW software like Moneyguide Pro from 2002 will solve most of the firms problems
9. it's time for teaming after everyone else has done it for 30 years
10. shutting down all lines of communication in the field increases communication and comraderie

That's off the top of my head, but there's more research in that vault and they'll pull it out as needed

LOL

Encouraged by the potential...

Helado...his frames are ice cold...and remember he's the smartest guy on these forums just ask him.
Conrad...his frames are blue as could be...cuz he's a political...or just likes the banter...
B...just do what he says frames...cuz he's said it before...
Spud...will transition frames when her family is out of the house...
RC...she's conducting a survey on which frames are the most appropriate...and then will proceed on her timeframe...
Free...His frames are in honor of Yogi...he's not redundant just does everything twice...like resign...
Mission...his frames are a sexual position...definitely on top...pity the poor recipient...oh and loves green...as in machine...

And I am sober at this moment...more to come when I may not be...don't worry for those that haven't been identified...its likely coming soon...

They say three times a charm...and to all who care...a bit sluggish this am...must have been that edible...

Ricky- His frames are full of hookers and Chix with Dix ...oh wait that could be redundant...but a hell of a guy who has been through life and back and still banging it...business or otherwise...

IAL- The fucker must have frames from college...old and crusty...might be time to go hi-tech...google glasses...

Nathan- His frames are 7200 yards, par 72ish...never met an office he couldn't get away from...and still hit his level...he's got it dialed...but he's too young for the senior tour...and too old for much else...

Wet- His frames are the theme of a drone or super secret agent...always watching over us...and never really telling us how he feels but you know he is documenting for further investigations.

Mo- His frames are built with nuts and bolts...he's solid...can tell in 30 seconds if you can afford him...and proclaims he gives solid advice for free...what a guy...

Apac...his frames have Elon Musk imbedded...and should heed his own advice...never put all your dough with Elon...ever...and know when to pull out...and pay the tax man. Imagine what a financial advisor would say...reminds of the famous Gillette commercial...Wilma!

Ducati- His frames have two wheels...the sucker is fast at everything he does...which doesn't play well in some arenas...but like Helado...his quick wit will take him places...

Hacksaw- His frames are all about M&A...he's proven the guy understands the metrics and who wins and loses in every deal. A hell of a resource when you walk the plank over to ownership...

To be continued...

Dashover- His frames cry for an easier route to the promised land...now AI may help...or hurt...
CFLR- His frames scream from the rafters...I gotta better OBA...one that pays enough so I can work part time...and have a balanced life...you SOB...so jealous...

Good point, and the likely scenario. The goal would be to build up the revenue then hire someone to manage the relationships.

Here’s another question: Do ed jones boas have non competes or non solicits?

Not directly……but if the dude you are talking to is planning this with the intention of monetizing the deal with his BOA….it complicates the equation.  Sounds like this guy wants to go Indy and then immediately get acquired????

You can t just “take over” a Jones book or branch.

Round 5 before an edible and a great cab...the ultimate buzz

RIARules- His frames needs no explanation...
knuk-        Late to the game, his frames indicate he likes Lasso...methinks he likes the 7 ft blonde...
rankstocks- His frames although still hunter green after all these years, proclaim...THE ORIGINAL Baller... nothing but kudos to this dude...
advisorman- His frames exude extreme knowledge of the penal system...loves lawyers...and being in the news...and winning...
Greggansberg His frames cry out for a shorter surname...barring that another kudo to the seminar sleuth who is right up there with Rank...gotta give this guy love he's the engergizer bunny of new biz. Doesn't need it but craves the yes..
Ron14- He's Mr. NFL so it goes without saying too much that his frames are oblong...but he seems fairly normal...probably suffering from CTE with too many blows to the head...
HCCW- His frames are disappointed...at least he admits the current regime and its challenges...but give the guy credit...he finds a silver lining amongst all the doomsayers...and at least unlike the Spiffster, he recognizes the pain...and doesn't sugarcoat his thoughts...

No guarantees the next few dittys are with a sober mind...just sayin...but it ain't Aaron Rogers after 36 hours of incarceration...I mean darkness...I see Nathan has got in on the fray...

No one is exempt, everyone feel free to add your frames to this now wonderful thread...originally I did it so Gob could qualify...there is a post bogie to get entrance isn't there? Or was I just looking for an excuse to be looney...

He is buying an RIA book.

GOB asked a fair question. Not sure why it’s a thing.

Can you share some details of the purchase?

Why does this matter? If someone has more multimillion accounts they will have lower velocity. Large bond brokerage accounts will lower velocity as well.

I like data. You brought up your margin and we all know that number doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

I guess I shouldn’t expect an employee to understand my situation - No matter how many times it’s explained. But that’s okay. You make good money, and are obviously a better prospector than I am.

I’d say in 10 years I will be past you, and maybe even in the next 3-4. But it still wouldn’t likely make up for all the years before, that you’ve made a lot more. But money isn’t my goal anyway. Which is difficult for some people to understand.

I find that money isn't the goal when you are not great at making it. I have a guy on my team though that is an exception to the rule so not saying you are not the same but I hear this kind of thing often in our business.

For example..  No one that is great at building a business stops at 40mm and then says they are building a lifestyle practice.  However there are a ton of people that try to convince you they set out to build lifestyle practices and could run bigger businesses if they wanted to .. but they just don't.  They value their time SO much more than you do so they only added 4mm a year so they could preserve their lifestyle.

I agree. People use it as an excuse on why they don’t grow. I never have. I am growing, just different than most - because I wasn’t as good at growing that way, and frankly didn’t like it. So I found a different way (and still try things like FMT).

And there’s nothing wrong with “not growing”. Find joy in life. If building a million dollar + book isn’t your goal, there’s nothing wrong with that.

I’m actually not an employee on the current model but that’s as lite as saying you are a real independent financial advisor. 😝

I am currently a small owner in an RIA, and have a contract where I own my own book of clients. You have neither of those things.

I always thought “lifestyle practice” just meant once you hit your desired income you stop trying to grow, and focus on creating efficiencies so you can work less.
