Greetings fellow AHeads,

Short time lurker, first time poster.

2 years in an Associate FA role right outta school, just finished first year in a sales role. ~12M AUM just me, but on a team with two other senior FA’s.

At a wire. Looking to grow my client base but with quality, keeping in mind I will be inheriting a book and won’t have unlimited time.

-Your new (broke) friend

So you have a relative in the business retiring soon?

What does prospecting at a wire look like these days? Grinding phones? Getting leads from the bank or elsewhere?

following up with website inquiries, which are almost always folks looking for help with a 401k withdraw.

I can cold call assuming it’s nobody with DNC enabled.

Lots of social media messaging (which seems to have the lowest return on time)

No real guidance. Just tryna be an Ahead that swims, not an Ahole who drowns.

How old are the senior FA’s? Are you confident they will sell to you and not the highest bidder, or decide to work another 20 years?

Somebody can always screw you, which is why I’m developing business frantically and not just sitting on my thumb. Oldest guy ~70, can’t really auction at wire, forced into the transition program. Nobody else is dumb as me to join a wire rn, handcuffed prospecting with no real growth plans at the firm level.

How long before they fire you?  What are they paying you?

I was in your exact same position a few years ago. I was offered a book at EJ and decided to GTFO rather than wait for the old wire guys to retire. Everyone on this site was pretty helpful in pointing out that I had no guarantee of inheriting anything.

That being said, if you are valuable to the team, negotiate a better split on the business. Tell them you’re broke and you feel you need $X to live, and determine what split gets you to $X.

prospecting wise you might want to pick a niche. Find 3 large companies where your clients already work and go after more people like that. Also get your senior guys to pay for some seminars so you can get good at presenting.

X2 bullish.

I took a sweetheart RTP deal too.

Why would the old bastard retire when he has broke fucks doin all the work while he cashes checks.  You've got nothing in writing, so it don't mean shit.

100% this!
It's like the tease in high school that tells you she'd go out with you if only she didn't have a bf. It's just enough to keep you acting nice to her. But in reality best thing you can do is tell her to fuck off and onto the next.

This. It's not like he's out tarring roofs every day. What's he gonna do, go home and spend all day with his wife for the rest of his life? I mean, that sounds pretty good to me, but you know what these old fucks are like.
