I recently found out my BD (one of the REALLY big independents) requires me to give the client 3 names for a professional referral (CPA, attorney, etc.) and document it in the client file.  This is my 5th BD in my career and I don't remember ever having this requirement before.  I'd like to know if other BDs do the same.

Kind of standard practice. Put the one you like most at the top.

I’m not aware of ever being required to.

I’ve never heard of this.  Most of the time I would be hard pressed to find three to refer to other than CPAs and quite frankly they are not taking any new clients.

That is the policy at WFA.

My RIA has the same policy. It is very stupid.

Never heard of this. I can see how a BD would like the policy - especially the big ones. Too much liability. Glad I don't have to do it, I only have 1 CPA in my town who is even taking on clients.

In a way, its protect your ass. You refer 1 CPA and he fucks up, then it makes you look bad. You refer 3 and they pick the one that fucks up, then it is on them. "You should have interviewed all 3 that I sent you."

That’s why mission gives them 3 large cap value mutual funds at Jones!
