Hello all - my first post. Looking to transition from working for a institutional fixed income firm to starting my own retail oriented financial advisory/planning business. Looking at wirehouses (UBS, ML, MSSB, Wells Fargo) and starting my own shop with the help of ACA or Garrett. Leaving behind good comp ($200K plus) for the hope of more control, more flexibility and no travel. Sometimes think I'm nuts. Don't need my current salary so willing to live on less (and will have to do so). Looking forward to reviewing existing posts when I get access. Thanks all!

Great. Just what we need around here. A Pats fan. If you stick around, this will get interesting (if there is ever a football season again.)

Thanks for the warm welcome. Have to think about something after my Celts went down and the B's lost last night. Forum posts have been really helpful. I'll be posting some questions soon.

Welcome. That's ballsy leaving a $200K+ job for this biz, especially if you're older!

No its not. I did the same thing. If you want it bad enough you just do it, and dont worry about the downside. Not that i don't give Patsfan credit, it takes a lot of commitment, so hats off to you

Huh? I didn't tell him not to do it, I said it was ballsy. And if you left a $200K/year job in your fifties to start as a wire trainee, then it was ballsy in your case too.

I didnt mean to say it wasn't ballsy, which i guess is what i said. What i should have said is that its ballsy, but if you want it bad enough, which Patsfan obviously does, you just do it, you don't think about it, because its almost like you have no choice. Not saying i wasn't scared shitless, i just had to do it so i really had no choice and tried not to think about what if. Patsfan, good luck, and feel free to call on me if you have questions. Would be glad to help, you going thru what i did at a similiar stage of life. Even though you're a Pats fan. We'll have plenty of time for that discussion in a different thread. LOL

Thanks all. Sportsfreak - would love to learn more about your story. I'm 46, 2 kids, commitments but I'm looking at the next 20+ years and want to have more control and build my own business. Certainly not the easiest route but I'd like to use some of my background. As is the case with everyone, the largest challenge will be selling when I haven't done it full time. Quick quesition on protocol - can I post questions here or go to the individual topic. Would love to get thoughts on various companies that I'm looking at right now. Pros & cons - like WFA but base salary is lower and for a shorter period of time. Stuff like that. Again - I appreciate all of the help!
